Rio: Where Volleyball Is a Way of Life

Maison du Volley recently visited Rio de Janeiro, meeting potential partners and shaping ideas for a new generation of volleyball experiences in the city. Rio has a way of making the case for itself the moment you arrive.

Volleyball here isn't something you go to watch. It's simply part of the day. Nets stretch along Ipanema and Copacabana from early morning until the sun goes down, and the game is played by everyone — teenagers chasing their first tournament, friends after work, and athletes at the very top of the sport, sharing the same sand. Brazil is one of the great volleyball nations, and nowhere is that more visible than on Rio's beaches.

The conversations in Rio centred on what a Maison du Volley programme could look like there: clinics on the city's best beaches, focused on both beach volleyball and indoor volleyball, with Olympians involved in the experience. Training with people who have played at the highest level, in the place where the sport feels most alive — it's hard to imagine a better classroom.

And then there's everything around the game. Rio is a city of remarkable landscapes — Sugarloaf, Christ the Redeemer, mountains that fall straight into the sea — and of music, food, and warm, generous people who make visitors feel at home within minutes. Mornings on the court, afternoons exploring the city, evenings with samba in the air: it's the kind of place where the trip becomes as memorable as the training.

More news on Rio to come. If this is a trip your team or group would be interested in, we'd love to hear from you.
